An autobiographical film about Truffaut’s young teen years, The 400 Blows (Les Quatre Cents Coups)--loosely translated meaning “Raising Hell”, even today is a poignant look at a misunderstood dreamer who finds more meaning in the cinema than in school or with two disinterested parents. As we watch Antoine Doinel’s life disintegrate because of a series of schoolboy lies and petty theft, we feel empathy for a child without an anchor. This is one of the favorite films of French New Wave film afficionados, showing the developing sense of personal story that gives the New Wave the richness that keeps it relevant to this day, but also lets the viewer draw his/her own conclusions. As Truffaut said himself, cinema “is an indirect art…it conceals as much as it reveals.”
